In situations like this when you are making something old new again, try not to see it for it's ugliness, but rather for it's potential to shine again. Insert moral story here. Look for something with a classic or fun shape. Then apply color to it. Spray paint usually works best for projects like this and gives you a quick result so if you don't like it, you can do something differently.
So often I am accused of not wearing the same thing twice, which is ridiculous. I just like to reinvent things a lot of times. It's like a fun little puzzle for me. Why not reinvent other things? Instead of getting rid of a piece of furniture, think of the furniture you do need and figure out how to use the old.
If you need some ideas, here are a few: Spray paint boring folding chairs for a fun event, Remove some drawers and add a fresh coat of paint or stain on a cabinet, up cycle a filing cabinet by making it into a planter, put a new face on an old shelf by gluing on a frame.
